About the Founder

“You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop.”

Mevlana Rumi

Hi, I am Samina Hashmi, founder of Drop Ocean

We believe these transformational times are calling upon each of us to step into our fullest leadership presence – Drop Ocean was born to serve that vision.

I am an engineer, turned executive coach, facilitator and strategist. Prior to founding Drop Ocean, I held senior leadership positions within the private and not-for-profit sectors, spanning a fifteen year career in the arena of culture transformation.

Over the years, I’ve had the gift of connecting with exceptional coaches, across diverse expertise, that I’d recommend in a heart beat! As Nature teaches us again and again, abundance increases the more we share. And so, you are invited to visit a most beauiful “gift store” on this site, Our Collective of Coaches page; where you can connect directly with these exceptional coaches.

Below is a window into my story.

I am deeply in awe of humans.

It’s an awe that I’ve held from a young age; often without even knowing it. With a slight naiveté I eagerly pursued a career in Engineering to solve pressing societal challenges; namely global poverty. I spent a bulk of that time with the national management team at Engineers Without Borders; Canada’s fastest growing international development organization at the time. I quickly learned the layers of complexity involved and began moving deeper into the space of organizational development and culture transformation.

Blessed with mentors, coaches and a predisposition to grit, I swiftly moved upward into senior roles. I received a few notable recognitions along the way; I was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women by the Women’s Executive Network, received the Honours Medal for Outstanding Leadership from Carleton University and awarded the YWCA Women of Distinction Award by the National Capital Region YMCA-YWCA.

In a defining moment of my career I took a sabbatical to research, study and journey within Eastern parts of the world. This resulted in an extraordinary complement to my then mainly Western-centric approach to leadership and psychology. This proved to be a step that deeply shaped and harmonized my life and work.

And now, as the founder of Drop Ocean, and particularly in the role of leadership coach, this sense of awe has landed in a place with the most alignment and felt-sense. I am a seasoned coach and skilled facilitator who draws from the fields of developmental psychology, complexity theory, leadership, mindfulness, somatics, and interpersonal neurobiology. I support individuals and teams in aligning with their unique talents, able to deliver what’s needed, and to do it well.

I am a professional certified coach by the International Coaching Federation as well as a certified coach with the renowned Presence-Based© Coaching, where I also served as an Advisory Board Member. I am certified to administer a number of leadership assessments, including the best-in-class Leadership Circle Profile® 360 Assessment and the team-based Collective Leadership Assessment®.

I have the joy of teaching a popular leadership course to upper-year engineering students at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. In 2024, I was touched to receive the inaugural ISTEP Teaching Award. I hold a Higher Education Teaching Certificate from Harvard University, and through this work, I’ve enjoyed supporting students during such a formative stage in their lives, and, for conspiring to evolve the higher education landscape to be more learning-centred!

And with a child-like excitement that comes with learning something new, I am beginning to discover, or perhaps remember, the poet in me.

I invite you into exploring a future partnership together with either myself or a gem from Our Collective of Coaches
